Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then located many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state early analysis show the fluid was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.

City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.

A senior official said the attack rendered him speechless and had to be solved quickly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a assailant targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
